Well here it goes…

Fitting that I’ve finally got around to starting this project on the last day of 2016.  I keep reading on social media about how 2016 has been a horrible year and that everyone is ready for 2017.  After seeing it for the last few weeks I started to believe it myself until I really thought about it.

I, in no way had a terrible 2016.  In fact, it was a pretty good one. It’s funny how taking in negativity on a regular basis can impact my own outlook.  Just a random thought.

I love the energy that large crowds can give off at concerts, clubs etc. I love the anticipation of what’s to come and when everything comes together just right, that cathartic release is matched by nothing else.  This is why I’ve always been drawn to new years eve, as manufactured as the evenings release can be.

This new years eve I decided to do a little bit of hopping around the city.  I have recently been going to a new local bar called Farside on the eastside of Toronto.  I really dig the atmosphere, music selection and the sense of calm amongst the people that work there.  I stopped in for a drink last week and was talking to one of the owners Mike (oh my god, I’ve asked his name several times and each time I’m drunk so forgive me if I’m wrong) and told him I’d stop in for a drink on new years eve. My intention was to use him as my first subject of this project.

Low and behold……failure.  I went in and he wasn’t going to be in till later.

I did however start chatting with the couple beside me, Leanne and Varugis.  They had got to the bar after doing a pub crawl going to their favourite brew pubs of 2016 here in Toronto.

I’ve travelled a bit in my life and it’s a funny thing that in North America, most times than not the first thing people ask is what you do for a living. Not to say this is a good or bad thing, just an observation.

Talking about careers led to talking about how they met. School mates, coworkers/room mates to then a relationship and marriage.  Varugis is from Kerala, India and Leanne from Perth, Ontario Canada.  I, an over sharer, shared that my last girlfriend was from Perth and yes, you guessed it.  She knew of her.

Unfortunately, it was time that I had to leave to my next stop on my new years eve list of stops.  It was nice to meet a couple sharing love over delicious pints an doing something different than the average new years eve celebration.
